Round Drop Leaf Dining Tables
My parents started their marriage buying an entire house full of Early American-style furniture. The centerpiece of our home was a round drop leaf dining table. We had years when its drop leaves were rarely propped up, except for Thanksgiving or Easter dinner. Other times, we ate weeknight dinners, worked on school projects, and finished Halloween costumes on its 70-inch surface.
Although my mother loved her round drop leaf dining table, she was frustrated by how few drop leaf dining tablecloths she was able to find with a 90-inch diameter. When she found a drop leaf dining tablecloth that fit, she used it for every event, year after year.
Many years after I was out on my own, I was traveling for business. I entered a restaurant by myself, ready to take a small drop leaf dining table in the corner and enjoy dinner on my own. But when I told the hostess, “party of one,” she asked me if I wanted to join the group drop leaf dining table. I had never heard of such a concept, but there it was in the middle of the restaurant-a round drop leaf dining table, bigger than Mom’s-where solo diners could join a group and enjoy some companionship over dinner. I loved the idea! Why didn’t more restaurants do this?
My time came to buy a drop leaf dining table, and I chose a contemporary rectangular drop leaf dining table (no drop leaf dining tablecloth issues for me, I actually thought) in solid cherry. But when it came to furnish my breakfast nook, I didn’t hesitate to select a glass-topped round drop leaf dining table. It was smaller than my mom’s, and looked nothing like hers, so I was confident that I was making choices that were my own.
I immediately saw the virtues of my new round drop leaf dining table. The round drop leaf dining table changed the dynamics of the dinner drop leaf dining table-everyone sitting there was easily engaging with everyone else. I could look each person sitting at the drop leaf dining table in the eye. And it was easy to slip a spare chair and a high chair to a round drop leaf dining table.
My mother decided on a dinette set similar to mine in her retirement condo; she didn’t really need seating for eight any more. Our family’s round drop leaf dining table was handed down my youngest brother who was just starting out on his own.
I moved into a new home, and my new square dining room accommodated my existing furniture well. But a few years later, I bought a vacation home, and used that as an opportunity to move out some of my well-loved and well-used furniture, and refurnish my everyday home. I didn’t hesitate when it came to the dining room-a found a round drop leaf dining table, resting on a pedestal, in a rich espresso finish. Its contemporary lines updated a traditional style.
My round drop leaf dining table has a unique feature. While my mother’s drop leaf dining table had leaves that turned its familiar round top to oval (it seated 12 easily when she did that), my round drop leaf dining table came with four leaves-each in the shape of a quarter circle. I pull recessed support rods out from the apron of the drop leaf dining tabletop, rest an arc-shaped leaf on top of the supports, and clamp it securely into place. When I do that for each of the four quarter-circle leaves, and I expand the drop leaf dining tabletop from 60 inches to 72 inches, and I can seat eight persons rather than six.
It’s funny that I actively avoided choosing a piece of furniture that resembled that my mother made a center of her home. I wanted to establish a household that was uniquely mine. But I ended up being happiest with a choice first made by my Mom.
How do i know where my table is from?
My buddy broke my dining room table and is opting to pay for it, but I do not remember where I got it. Bottom of a chair says "Douglas Furniture" and the bottom of table says "made in mexico" that was the only two hints i have. The table is rectangle with a leaf extension and has roundish style legs. The chairs have an iron design on the back with look like leaves. Anyone know where I could find this?
Where are some good places to find rustic dining tables?
My wife and I want an 8-person dining table. We would rather not have leafs but they’re ok if necessary…
We love rustic style furniture and just don’t know where to shop. Our theme is either going to be a "rustic" look, or a european/medieval style. We don’t want highly polished furniture, or something fancy-shmancy that your grandmother would love. Any help on where to shop would be great!
Thanks!
I need help furnishing a small balcony…?
I have a small balcony on my new studio condo that I need to furnish. You can see a picture of my balcony here: http://www.101eolacondos.com/HTML/Cherokee.html
HOWEVER – the picture is very much not to scale. To the left of the door measures 67" from railing to door jamb (there is no flower box, just a balcony railing). The opposite side of the door measures 59" from door jamb to the wall (concrete). The balcony is 52" deep. The door measures 38" and leaves about 16" of clearance when it’s opened fully.
The wall of the condo is floor to ceiling glass (12′ tall). The railing is contemporary glass in a metal frame. It is 42" high.
I’d like to put a small 4 person picnic table with non-attached 2 person benches on the left (67") side. A small umbrella would be amazing as it’s pretty sunny/hot out there mid-day! This would be for alfresco dining and even playing cards/etc.
On the right (59") side, I’d like to put a small 2 person love seat type thing with a small table for drinks. This would be where I’d smoke cigars and sip drinks.
I have no idea where to find this stuff. I like wood, with perhaps a contemporary flair (cushions/umbrella color). I also don’t have a fortune to spend. I’d like to keep this under 00 if possible.
Thanks!
Dominic
I love the Applaro idea. I checked it out and I think I can swing that table with 4 small folding chairs. I’m going to make my own cushions. Has anyone ever used velcro strips to keep the cushions in place??? Just a thought I had.
I also found this umbrella: http://www.teakwickerandmore.com/Galtech-International-111-211X-AT1005.html
I think that should fit the bill just fine. Or something like that (cheaper hopefully). I’ll just bore a hole in the middle of the table and I should be good! Looks like I’m heading to IKEA this weekend!
annoying habits-how to deal with them?
I live with my boyfriend and everything is fine. We’ve been living here for a little less than a year but I’ve noticed that the small things that never bothered me before are now starting to irritate me a lot.
He comes home and takes his shoes and socks off and leaves them under the coffee table. Sometimes there will be like four pairs of dirty socks just sitting under the table. Who does that? I have tried pointedly taking the socks as he pulls them off and putting them in the hamper but he still does it. We have a place for his shoes but he will insist on leaving them under the coffee table and it annoys me to no end.
Also, he is one of those people who keeps the receipt for everything he ever buys, ever for any reason. Del Taco? KEEP THE RECEIPT. He refuses to get online statements from anyone because he believes that with a paper statement he can catch the companies "cheating him" or "screwing up". He takes these receipts and unopened letters and scraps of paper and just leaves them everywhere. They’re covering the entire top of the coffee table, and the dining room table, and the headboard, and both of our dresser tops. I got him a plastic bin that fits in a bookshelf for him to store his papers and go through them but the ones I put in there he flat out ignored and the other papers continue to build up. Whenever I try to at least stack the papers so we have room somewhere he gets annoyed and acts like everything in the pile was of the most dire importance and that by stacking them I have lost everything and it’s gone forever. He asks me not to touch his stuff.
These two things really really get on my nerves and I don’t know what to do about it. When I mention it at all he gets really defensive and starts pointing out all the annoying things he thinks I do, like forgetting to jiggle the handle on the toilet so the water doesn’t run.
Any help?

He gets free play in the house x amount of hours..doors closed. As.well as outside time on a leash.

Solutions for dining room chairs?
I bought a dining set out of the penny-saver several years ago but it only came with 4 chairs. It hasn’t been a problem because I didn’t like to entertain before but now I do and I can’t find any chairs to match the existing ones. It’s cherry wood and traditional looking and I’m planning on going with the country theme in the room when I paint it. We also always leave the leaf in it (the table is 7 X 3.5 ‘). Painting it is not an option. And neither is buying a brand new dining set.
My cat suddenly scratches me and leaves, why?
I’ve had this cat since she’s a baby and she’s always been an indoor cat. She’s fixed when she was 4 months old, and has always lived with her sister, also a female. She’ll be 2 years in September. She has an obsesion with rubber bands, loves playing with them and steals them when she sees them.
Lately, when I’m sitting at the dining table, doing anything from eating to being in the computer, she stands behind me and scratches by leg or my b-tty, of course it hurts and I scream. I talk to her and say no, and she cries and leaves. She’s done this several times. This morning, when I was sleeping, I heard her running from the living room to my room, she jumped straight on top of me and scratched me, not sure if it was on purpose, and then ran out of the room. now what?
Hoarder or OCD help me identify this behavior?
A person who rearranges others things but leaves her own things in the way: on chairs, tables, blocking hallways, hanging on door knobs. She has two walk in closets, three dressers, all the cabinets in the bathroom and three bedrooms for her stuff exclusively; plus her stuff is also in the dining room, living room and kitchen/. This stuff is old clothes she out grew 30yrs ago, candles, dishes she never uses, cook books but she never cooks.Mementoes of clubs she belonged to. Entire sets from plays.
